No. Many countries had suspended that during WWI. FDR reinstated the gold standard in the US when he banned private ownership of it. Then, after the war, Breton Woods extended that to the rest of the world. It finally collapsed in the 1970s under Nixon and the restrictions on owning gold were lifted.
