On Tuesday, an internal meeting of Mongolia’s majority party, the MPRP, made a second review of a draft Investment Agreement for the development of the Oyu Tolgoi copper and gold deposit. D.Lundeejantsan, chairman of the party’s parliamentary group, said that the MPRP members approved terms and conditions for the multi-billion dollar agreement “in general”. Parliament is expected to begin initial discussions on the agreement this week.

Prime Minister S. Bayar presented the draft agreement to Speaker of Parliament D. Demberel last week, beginning the final stage of the approval process.

Each page of the draft agreement was also initialed by representatives from Mongolia’s government and Ivanhoe Mines Mongolia last week, following the completion of negotiations and approval in principal of the agreement by the National Security Council.

The investment agreement is subject to the approval of the Boards of Directors of Ivanhoe Mines and its strategic partner Rio Tinto.
