While that (cost reduction) is the likely trend of technological innovation (even in oil and coal), the extent and duration of such trends is unknown. Accordingly its mistaken to simply assume that technology will necessarily make economical tomorrow what isn't today.

It's a damn good assumption in an immature industry.

On the other hand exploration for oil has harvested all the "low hanging fruit". The other new supply to replace dwindling reserves will be harder to reach, and therefore more expensive regardless of tech improvements.

You have one tech getting more expensive and one getting cheaper.... doesn't take much to figure out what's going to happen.

It's also a mistake to bet against a clear trend in technology. Right now a slower equivalent of Moore's Law is in play on solar tech and car batteries. I've seen this type of thing in tech too often in my decades to think this time will be any different. That is why I have faith it will happen yet again.
