Investing in R&D and even pilot projects are different from massive wholesale investment to replace the power producing energy we have now.

we have an industry that is dominated by two energy sources: oil and coal.

We have an electrical power industry that invests in whatever technology it finds desirable and practical for its local market - natural gas, coal, nuclear, wind, solar, geothermal, whatever. I saw something from TXU recently which indicated its power was about 35-40% each coal and natural gas, 10% wind, X% nuclear (I forgot the number) and a small amount other.

We have auto companies willing to produce whatever cars they deem saleable.

So I don't think we're in a situation where the oil and coal industries are able to strangle other sources of energy.
