Everyone's army in WWII was, but that didn't stop some WWII commanders from fighting based on attrition across broad lines, or stop some Civil war commanders from relying on bold maneuver.

Also remember Sherman wasn't facing much of a defense like Grant was, so he could more faster an at will

True. Sherman (in GA) had a strong local superiority.
