I do agree with the spirit of your statement ... that for FC to be successful in "non-island" networks, high speed gateways must be available. The NTT project shows promise. I also heard at N+I in Atlanta, that Ancor (ANCR) is developing a FC to GE gateway.

As for GE investments, MRVC is the only smaller company shipping GE that is public. They are certainly not the best, but they may be able ride the wave for some time. I also heard that Gigalabs may be going public, but I'd stay far away from these guys.

As for the Big Boys, BAY has the best opportunity to profit, short-term from GE. Their products are supposed tol be shipping in volume in January.
