A temporary condition but one without a structural remedy for up to a few years. Since US parties don't have strict party heirarchies like parliamentary organizations, Steele's weakness leaves the leading voices vaguely to McConnell and Boehner, but they have no actual authority beyond Capitol Hill.

Without a coherent message that speaks to current concerns and an acknowledged senior spokesman, much of the electorate will listen to various Republican pols commenting all over the spectrum and wonder what the party stands for now.

They don't want to go into 2010 with that image. "We want to stand for something that sounds like Reagan 'cuz he was our last really successful guy," is the only message I hear slipping out now.
