I'm guessing our CO2 use is at least 80% less than most of my fellow area residents based on energy costs alone. Yet, the gov't favors policies that allow the wealthy(Mike Dell for instance, who sports a reliably rumored $40,000/month electric bill here). When I see alternative energy projects walk away with millions in profit based on selling "carbon credits" before producing one kwh of electricity I am disgusted. I hope we see some change, real change, but so far I see little evidence other than new programs that manage to slant the burden onto those least able to pay. Personally, I just refinanced my house. In the past, being off grid meant no difference to the lenders. Now, 2 months into O's reign, the lenders want 1/4 point extra to service the loan on my home because it is "off grid". The State decided to eliminate all tax credits for retrofitting homes with alternative energy devices while requiring all new homes to have a required solar hot water heater, even in cloudy areas where they are not cost effective. Very little new construction is happening yet there are 10's of thousands of homes needing retrofit. The irony is that electric users that have a larger load actually get a reduced rate compared to J6P residential because they are "better" customers. I think something like 85-90% of our electricity comes from burning bunker oil in massive generators, all in a State ruled by Democrats for 50 years with the most abundant wind, solar and geothermal in the entire US. Last night I watched our leaders discuss the stimulus moneys coming to Hawaii. Out of over $2B there was $12m allocated to "energy". The bulk of the moneys is earmarked for saving gov't jobs, gov't infrastructure jobs to support our unions, a huge expansion at Pearl Harbor to keep the military budget growing.... In conclusion, being responsible for this planet boils down to a personal decision for me. Anyone counting on the gov't to "fix" anything is going to get a big fiscal surprise. Meanwhile, the ultra wealthy behind their locked gates at Kukio continue to golf and brag on the 19th hole about who has the bigger electric bill(true story!). These are the same folks walking away from Wall St. with your money and paying lobbyist big dollars to insure they keep it.
