Hi Bilberry and All,

Yes you did spark some good discussion and you got a few of us Hard Drive nuts to look into this Co. I went through this thread and the 1996 10Q today...lots of interesting stuff...didn't like the CATZ thing much from the beginning personally, i like niche companies that supply high growth technical players and JMAR might just be that with their Mirage and measurement/trimming capabilities as they relate to MR fab...if I play this stock it will be on the MR head angle....I follow the drive business and companies closely and I'll give you just a few snipits here and I'll try to post more later

RDRT the major (independant) head manf. gave these numbers for transistion from TFI (Thin Film Inductive) heads to MR (magnetoresistive) heads...they will be shipping 50% MR this Q (Dec.), 75% next Q (March) and 90% in the june Q...their CEO said that the TFI war is over and almost all of their resources were pointed toward winning MR designs.

MR heads have been on the horizon for some time and their time has finally come...IBM (who almost has to be who ordered that equipment if the release is accurate because they are the only HDD manf who also is a box (coomputer) maker) is a leader and has huge internal demand along with the ability (capacity) to sell to other drive manf's (WDC for example)

The other major independant head manf (APM) is just beginning a ramp into the MR side of the business (they just hired someone away from IBM expressly to oversee that transition)..they are behind the curve and could provide good demand for JMAR's product as they must move to this technology...TFI is dead for all intents and purposes (a couple Q's left on the outside IMO)...the thing with both RDRT and APM is one has to find out if JMAR is a supplier...?

See my next post for a relative table on storage growth...tables work better on SI in fixed font....

Tim

Here we go...

Heres a table that shows the growth in storage
over the next couple of years...59% is a nice
number and there'll be MR heads in a vast
majority of those disk drives..this is
courtesy of APM's home page (which is a good
source of info RE HDD's and MR heads)

Bilberry - I'm just getting synchrotrons and point source straight in my head -- now you want me to discuss MR heads. Gimme a break -- why can't this company do something simple, like make bottled water.<g>
