We forget that there is exciting news from other parts of the globe A story from Russia during the past week from AFP news agency peaked my curiosity, despite the lack of any solid information. Russians are notorious for their criptic news stories and not providing adequate news details...I guess it's still part of the old Soviet mindset ...inherited from the former Soviet Union. AFP said that, Russian scientists at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) have developed what I see as a "combo super" battery that can harness both traditional solar power and star power as well. Valentin Samoilov of the Dubna Nuclear Institute says that scientists: "have successfully created a new substance... thanks to which this battery can work on earth, independently of meteorological conditions, using solar and stellar energy." Samoilov also added that the new battery would be cheaper than a traditional solar panel, and added "This is a battery like no other," it could function 24 hours a day and is twice as effective as an ordinary solar panel at converting light into electricity. Moreover, Samoilov declared, the new battery was cheaper than a solar panel." We located a second ITAR-TASS story that describes this new substance as a "heteroelectric" but doesn't go into any further elaboration; Imagine harnessing the power of distant stellar bodies as well as the sun on a 24/7 basis. We'll definitely try to contact the original source- Valentin Samoilov of the Dubna Nuclear Institute and get back to our blog readers. see related past bog from Nov 6, 2005smarteconomy.typepad.com
