"teacher salaries are some of the lowest for a professional in this country,"

Name some lower paid professionals with at least four year academic degrees.

They pay a lot less in health care than I do for the same coverage, and they have retirement pension that pays almost as much as they earned during their working years

Here....they save on themselves but they pay full price for their spouses and children. It is true about the retirement benefits.

By the way, my car insurance isn't nearly $2K/year,

A single guy in LA in his 20s and 30s with a BMW pays close to $2k.....higher if he's had an accident. Car insurance is more expensive than in the OC......accidents are much more prevalent. Plus LA has more uninsured drivers.

and I have a nice car. Plus the median house in the LAUSD isn't at $500K (or at least not anymore).

I said nearly $500:

2/18/08 $470,000 (down 14.5%) 41,830 (Up 32.3%)

And as soon as the recession is over it will be back up over $500k. Try buying a $500k house on $60k.
