I think Obama is a liberal in some things but a DLC Dem (free markets are us as long as they are going up but not so much when they are going bankrupt) on economic issues. People like him are still making the mistake that there is such a thing as an efficient market that prices things efficiently and sends capital to the right places as needed. If that were true, things would be peachy. The free market barely works out on paper. It doesn't work in reality because information doesn't flow, transactions aren't frictionless and costless and participants aren't equal. Underlying the entire mess is the myth that people are rational and work in their own economic self interests and that is obviously complete hogwash. If the dot com boom and bust didn't make that clear, the debt boom and bust surely should have.
