Since they were doing it from England, I'm not sure what law applies (contracts usually choose an applicable law). In a real world scenario, they would just not honor their contracts and tell the other parties to get in line at bankruptcy. Of course, here in bailout cloudcuckooland, honoring contracts that you made without any real intention or ability to ever pay off is the highest priority.
