I suspect they thought they had the freedom to pursue (not necessarily make) profitable enterprise. That would include bonus money to those who make money. They are not the idiots, you are.

And you would know if they were idiots, wouldn't you hugh?

No, they thought they could do anything they want, up to and including running a con game. Which is what they did. They were like Madoff, but on a vastly larger scale.

But, I guess you admire them for being smart...
