Bernie Madoff is just a sleazy, ruthless white collar criminal -- for Bernie the ends always justified the means (just the same for former Enron Execs like Jeff Skilling and Ken Lay).

Amazing what a little charm and charisma can do. The guy in the oval office comes to mind too.

bernie bled whomever he could

He was running a Ponzi scheme, like any pyramid operation he needed ever increasing numbers of patsies. He harvested his affinity groups, Palm Beach area, Jews, Fairfield CT (OK, that one is a tough connection to make).

He wasn't evil and greedy because he was a Jew, he just took advantage of the trust of other Jews. It is just as fair to say he was evil and greedy because he lived in Palm Beach. But to ignore the way he used his web of affinity to rob people because it smacks of antisemitism strikes me as disarming oneself in the face of financial destruction.

If one human life is valued by insurance at $5 million, Bernie took the equivalent of 10,000 lives. I think it is important to unflinchingly look at all the weapons he used to rob people. He was a con man. He used trust. Another was the illusion of exclusivity. Why did all these people trust him?
