>>Andy: better keep Henry's "20 by 12-31" bottle handy-you're gonna need it!<<

Cy, I don't think you are current on the terms of the bet. If LGND does not hit 20 by the close next Friday (highly unlikely, I suspect), Henry owes me 1 bottle of wine. Alas, I don't think we can take SA's giddiness to the bank, or perhaps, we should say, to the bottle. However, I have most generously suggested that I would be willing to wait in the hopes that Henry wins the 2nd bet (the 12/31 bet you mentioned. However, at best, that would make us even, with neither of us receiving a bottle of wine (how sad, but certainly better than I receiving 2!). No point in my getting a bottle of wine which I have to mail back a month or two later. As far as the August 31, 1998 bet, well, that's a long way in the future.

>>BTW I don't doubt it takes a Big Pharma 6-10 years to get a diabetes drug through Phase III.<<

You should doubt it. Robinson said five years and that is probably quite conservative. LLY is looking to have new drugs coming online in 2001 and 2002 when some of their heavy hitters go off patent. Targretin is just about finished with P2. Also, there will be a lot of off label use which will provide a lot of additional info, although outside of strictly controlled trials.
