<<All: Just when you thought Fleckenstein was about to take the stock for a downward spiral, the New York Times comes out with a fairly upbeat article on Cymer. Angus sees 40% sales growth for next year. Can anyone help provide the link?>>

The Sunday edition is already up at the Times' web site. The mention is in the "business digest" section. The article begins

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- It's not enough that tiny Cymer Inc. holds the progress of the entire semiconductor and computer industries in its hands. Now, it also has short-sellers and rumor mongers on its tail.

By the way, don't forget to set your clocks back an hour.

Article entitled: "A Laser Maker Tries to Avoid the Beams"

Details:

--- 40% sales revenue growth for 1998 per Angus.

--- NYT says that Cymer has "near monopoly" on market and this has made it the most successful IPO in 1996.

---- Article deals with rumors but gives Cymer a chance to respond;
"But while there have been some reliability problems with its lasers, Cymer says the rumors are exaggerations. And if so, some investors may sense a buying opportunity. Although some analysts say the stock is high priced, it is trading at about 34 times 1998 estimated earnings -- lower than the ratios of many high technology companies that do not, like Cymer, dominate a business."

---- Refers to some rumors as "wild and false."

---- "If Cymer continues to dominate its industry, it can potentially double its sales in the next two years."

---- Hodess and Goto analysis referenced. Cymer says it is "old news." Nikon says there is fundamentally no big trouble with laser. Spokespeople for other semi companies say the lasers work well. Journalistic conclusion: "While there seem to be some problems with both the lasers and the steppers, many experts say the problems are to be expected with new technology."

---Lenny Sanders of Needham said he was confident that technical hitches would be worked out and even if Cymer experienced a slowdown in orders it is still a good investment.

---- Competiton issue dealt with. Komatsu seen as threat because Japanese are uncomfortable dealing with reliance upon US company for key technology. "Making reliable lasers is easier said than done, however. Komatsu, for example, had to pull one off the market a year and a half ago."

---- Akins states Cymer's Lasers will be used for 15 to 18 years.

Good night.
