His Manhatten rent for a normal 2 bedroom is ~$65k per year, then you've got utilities/food/whatnot for wife and two kids. He couldn't live on his $120k salary given rent (for a normal 2 bedroom apartment) and income tax.

Without the bonuses, the very same apartment would cost $30k per year to rent.

Has anyone heard anything about FM and FM and the bonuses??? Are they going to pay the bonuses back to the government?

The WHOLE thing makes most of us irate! The taxpayers are being used and abused by our current Government.

Again, IF a company takes money from the Government to try to ward off bankruptcy, then no bonuses should be given. The contracts are faulty if they don't include that clause. You don't receive commission unless you produce, so why should people get bonuses if a company is going to fail? The person can always quit or not accept the contract in the first place.

However, if a company DID write a contract with the employee, then our Government has NO business stepping in and trying to break it.

And if the Government does try to tax this money just for the few people who got it, we will be officially under Fascism/Socialism.

Re-Reading yours, the bonus they may be talking about when it is called 'retention bonus' could be like a commission bonus...If you place "X" of business, you get a base salary. If you place "X" over that expected number, then you get a commission in addition to the salary. If you don't make more money than your base, after a specific period of time, you will be history at this company. If you make more than an a certain number (i.e. 3-5 times as much the expectation you get for your base salary) then that Much Larger number could be called a "retainer bonus"....

There are companies that do this....

And in fact, this could certainly be one of the reasons for all the excesses in many of the financial packages that were dreamed up in the 90's and beyond.

It all boils down to in Employment Law for each State, and what the definition is of "bonus" with what expectations attached.
