We have had worse. Don't know if you experienced the Carter/Iran days, but they remind me a lot of what we have now. No direction, no courage, nothing but form over substance. Of course, we didn't suffer through the gutting of manufacturing that globalization gave us or the incredible shenanigans of the financial industry of the last three or four years, so the Carter Era analogy is admittedly flawed. I won't minimize it: The challenges we face are similar in kind to those we faced in the mid and late 1970s, but they are definitely nowhere near the scope of what we have on our hands now. I think we need to purge of our financial and political 'leadership.' The greedheads contribute so much moolah to Washington that they have been able to buy a free ticket to do whatever they've wanted to do. We need decent regulation as a start. But with the SEC being a springboard to Wall St. and lucrative law practices, it is a toothless tiger. What we need is a renewal of Kennedy era idealism, a discarding of cynicism. And punishment for the ones who got us where we are. I think Obama had a chance to ignite that kind of idealism but so far my impression is that he is an empty suit. An otherwise inexperienced oratory and rhetoric bot. I'm afraid the man has no inner core, which of course allowed those looking for change to see whatever they wanted in him. Bernanke is doing what Bernanke knows, operate the printing press and his famous helicopter. We should not be surprised for that is exactly what he said he would do if he had to. FWIW, I think the only way we can do anything constructive is to protect and take care of our families and ourselves honorably but by all means necessary. That is truly the American Way.
