Not only is it clearly illegal, the firms will just increase the size of the bonuses to offset the increased taxes. We are being governed by a bunch of morons.

Where are all the loud mouthed demolib pinheads who were concerned about GWB "shredding" the Constitution? It is a great point. They're all worried about the Constitution protecting the rights of terrorists who tear America down. But it doesn't seem to bother them at all when a corrupt government tears the country down from within.

This bonus flap is nothing but a red herring to take our eyes off the mismanagement of the administration and the congress. My bet is that money flowing from the taxpayer through the hands of the people who contractually earned the bonuses will have a more stimulative effect than that money flowing back to the government (through these illegal taxes). A government that proves over and over again that they can't manage money effectively.

Someone at the White House (Big Secret, maybe it was the teleprompter) called up Dodd and said make sure you put a provision in the Pork Bill so these poor guys at AIG can get a nice bonus. Now they get their nice bonus and the WH goes postal. Maybe if Congress had taken the time to read it, or Obama had fulfilled his promise to post bills before he signed them, this wouldn't have been a problem. Do you think that mysterious person at the WH WANTED a big stink?

I had to look up what that phrase referred to. It seems to me a whole lot of our tax code oughta be unconstitutional .... but apparently that passes constitutional muster. Be great if it didn't. Its crazy what is going on. And its so obviously all a pose. I heard on the radio that Liddy had requested the recipients of the bonuses give all or half of them back and that some had done so already. Those guys could be stuck paying confiscatory taxes on something they'd given back .... AIG CEO says employees starting to return bonuses .... Liddy said that on Tuesday, he had "asked those who have received retention payments in excess of $100,000 or more to return at least half of those payments." Some have "already stepped forward and returned 100 percent," he added. .... news.yahoo.com

Well.... they are too stupid to realize that socialism/communism doesn't care if you're republican or democrat....or what your children and grandchildren may need 30 years from now.
