I've known many, many CEOs who worked for zero. While you aren't permitted by the IRS to do so in small corporation, when a closely held corporation has a bad year and the CEO is also the principal shareholder, there really isn't much choice.

I've known a good number who went years without drawing a salary.

When you're self-employed you do what you have to do sometimes.
