I used to live in China for an expat assignment. Actually had been to Ningbo while I based in the country, but never got to see much around there. I agree with your statement, but I have only been to two of the four listed...

Ningbo & Changchun. As well as many other city and rural places.

Yiwu is a nice small town. It has a huge mosque and a huge church in it, surprisingly. The money for the mosque came from Saudi Arabia. The money for the church came from residents from Hong Kong who live and work in Yiwu. The church has a soup kitchen for poor local residents and is packed on Sundays.

They had a bunch of businesses leave a couple years ago due to electricity shortages. It used to be real hard to get there before they built the freeway.

Ningbo is a very modern town as well. There has been a lot of real estate speculation there the past 5-years.
