Household debt is in the $13 Trillion range... huge. I think about equal to GDP. That could, truly, make the US Government insolvent. Do you think the world's financial players would continue to buy our treasuries?

Inflation is ugly (especially for people with lots of money) but it might be a way out of this spot. It will raise the value of the assets so that the ratio of debt to asset value decreases. Of course you have a bunch of other bad reactions to inflation.
