Million, Billion Trillion. These numbers are beyond people's comprehension. The spending of them means nothing to the voters.


This is why the bitterest fight in any departmental budget battle usually turns out to be over a bicycle shed, or some such. A comprehensible item that becomes someone's point of pride, and someone else's point of outrage. AIG bonuses are this week's bicycle shed.

I really feel sorry for the 100,000 AIG workers who were not involved in any of this mess.
