It's funny. I always hesitate about getting invested in moral crusades. Afganistan war was fought to route out al quaeda and those who gave them support and/or tolerated their perfidy while in-country. But then we see the pics of the women and it tugs at the heartstrings. How do we abandon them? Thats a rhetorical question for now but might be real enough in a year.
Also Tibet. IF we do pull out of that economic mess, we have no choice but to be nicer to our banker and that banker rules tibet with an iron hand. I learned a long time ago, the only alternative to perpetual war is to accept the limitations of power, even that of a superpower. JFK called idealism without illusions. Realism is tough on the moral fiber.
