Don't misunderstand me, gold only falls short of food in extreme and localized situations like Zimbabwe. The people have no access to to either food or to an international exchange where they can exchange their gold for food. So they are stuck doing business with small time traders that provide them with food for gold at a very high market for the food. The mark-up was 4X according the "reporter" in that youtube clip.

I am sure that the people with gold are very, very happy to have gold, but they would probably be even happier if they had enough food and didn't have to spend their gold at a bad "exchange" rate.

My thought being not that you should sell all your gold, but rather that it might be good to hoard some food also at least from the Zimbabwe extreme point of view.

As far the chart (food versus gold), there are are not enough hungry people yet in the US to move that trend in the other direction and hopefully there never will be...
