West,

Your guess about that global nuc war is interesting, but it remains pure speculation and is not probable.

I think I agree with the rest of your post.

Radiation as in dirty bombs...not nuclear Claude.

However that remains a wild card.

This war will very much involve the Middle East and Eastern Europe...

If life is gonna get ugly going into 2014, then what will the global war in 2010 look like?

I think all rational people have niggling doubts about the long term viability of our species because of the outliers, like Hitler e.g., who would gladly pull the trigger on something like nuclear war or unleash a SARS-like weaponised virus. We humans live with the devils among us.

We spent much of the 70s and 80s dwelling on that possibility -- anybody remember fallout shelter drills like I did in the early 70s? -- and it's awful for the psyche. However, *if* it came to pass, and if it were truly terrible, ala Neville Shute's On the Beach, then perhaps we would twitter our species' epilogue to the big Web Server in the Sky and vanish once and for all, allowing some future intergalactic visitor to confirm what perhaps we should have admitted all along: that the cockroach is the fittest one of all.

Or perhaps the rest of the species sharing our planet will have the good fortune to see 98% of humans eradicate themselves, and thus let the planet recover from our insolence and let them have a chance, too.
