"This is an absurd position to take. "

What is absurd is not realizing that many regard us as invaders.

"I don't know what the makeup of the Taliban is today and you don't either, but it doesn't matter."

Unless you want to take the stance that the Taliban is composed of foreigners, you are left with the conclusion it is mainly Pashtuns drawn from the area. In fact, there is abundant evidence that is the case and no evidence that it is composed of outsiders.

"Most Afghanis do not want Taliban rule and never have."

Not even vaguely true. Especially amongst the Pashtuns. The Taliban brought stability and protection from the warlords. Considering the country has been in a state of chaos for decades, that is no small thing.
