What about deciding whether increasing energy independence is really a priority.

If arctic production is so terrible, why not just shut down all existing Alaskan production now? Then we could be assured of not damaging the pristine northern environment.

"raising environmentalists' hackles"

We should recognize everything will do this. Building more dams for hydroelectric does so we can't build anymore. Building solar farms in CA or NM does. Drilling offshore FL for natural gas, which won't spill, cant be done. Wind farms off Cape Cod - can't do that. We can't build new coal plants, can't build most nuclear plants. Had to dissemble a built nuke plant in NY. Building new tranmsission lines to bring solar or wind power to cities does. Why don't we tell environmentalists to take their hackles and stuff 'em?

fear a repeat of the Exxon Valdez accident, the largest tanker spill ..

Notice: Tanker spill. Not a drilling accident. Same risk occurs with importing oil. Substituting imports for domestic doesn't decrease the risk of tanker spills.
