That sounds like the Nicholas Cage movie I just saw. Only, in the movie, it was a solar "superflare", that reached out from the sun and blew off our atmosphere, like we'd blow out a candle.

The universe is full of threats like this, and that's just the one's we KNOW about. Humans are so very tiny and frail in comparison. We're like a virus that evolved and lives on the skin of ONE orange. If we don't expand to other planets and star systems, eventually one will get us.
