I have been fortunate to the current time and have never had to apply my training in a real rescue.

My parents had a rule at our cabin on the lake. Nobody could swim unless there was an adult or another child with lifesaving training. This created a strong incentive for every child to take and pass a lifesaving course. Every child in the house did this so that they were not an impediment to any other swimmer.

Of course the same rule extended to boating.

When I was a kid, 5 of us went swimming in Doc Lang's pond. 4 of us came out of the water and got dressed. #5 was pulled out an hour later with a grappling hook. That was 50 years ago and I still remember how blue he was.
