u.s. education is not in more "big trouble" than is the general u.s. society. schools reflect society. test scores measure society. as currently contrived, tests do a poor job of measuring student learning, instructor skill, or school performance. the variables that influence test scores are largely beyond school walls. the LIE is that teachers are the primary determinant of an individual's success or distress. this is silly. family and life variables have much greater influence. of course teacher unions need citizens to believe in the omnipotence of the teacher. this is a ploy to get money to teachers, schools, and teacher unions. and of course conservative think tanks (manhattan institute, etc.) want citizens to believe education is suspect and wasteful. this is a ploy to reduce government spending and taxes. public education is caught in the middle of an ugly fiscal tugofwar. i would prefer to see a public education system that was like those in scandinavian countries. oh my, would that be a cultural shift. if you'd like to learn more about the manhattan institute vs. eddra debate, it's labeled jay greene and gerald bracey. cheers!
