i hontestly don't know that obama said about improving the u.s. education system. he's a politician and speaks for position. as the u.s. shifts priorities while he's in office, educational outcomes will shift, also. i believe this shift will, perhaps marginally, benefit public education. we will soon find out. in regard to lausd, there is a good chance that drop-out rate will improve. i suspect much of the drop-out was due to recent latino immigration, as mike noted. the recession and border policy will inhibit immigration and this is likely to reduce drop-out. there seems to be a bit of an outflow to mexico already. california drop-out rate is also strongly influenced by the high school exit exam, which acts to repeatedly punish slow learners and unmotivated students until they give up. california needs alternative pathways (tech paths, trade paths, etc.) to help non-college prep students "graduate" and become employable. i would not be surprised to see obama move in this direction. many infrastructure jobs do not require college (asphalt/concrete, alternative energy worker, construction, etc.). by providing alternate paths, more students will find reason to continue school until graduation. speculation all. have a good weekend!
