My father wanted to learn to fly when he moved a computer business in the 1960's because the local infrastructure was insufficient.

My father was convinced that learning to fly then was not a good idea. He often mentioned the concern he would lose his concentration like we all do when driving. That may not be a problem for a person who grew up flying. For a late learner, it can be deadly.

OTOH I would never hesitate to fly with my BIL. He is a by the book pilot. He also maintains his instrument only rating.

I only flew actively about 3 years. I was a check ride away from getting my commercial rating when I quit. I had 2 "incidents" just before that, neither of which was of my doing. I had teen aged kids and a wife to think about, which I did. I never took control of an airplane again. I've let the pros drive ever since.
