Actually, the whole megapixel thing is overblown. I think the megapixel benchmark is something that is used in marketing cameras so people think they are getting something better than the last generation of digital cameras.

If you are looking for a camera that will take pictures that you can print out, say, as 4x6's or for posting on the web, a 5 megapixel camera will do just as good a job as a 10 megapixel camera. The megapixels matter only if you are wanting to blow something up beyond 8x10 or so.

What really matters in terms of overall picture quality is the size of the sensor, at least that is what I've been told by a photographer friend.
