Oh I agree our military soaks up money. It props up corporations (economy) while soaking the taxpayers. In fact I think the real military budget is far vaster than stated. The main cause our economy is doomed. For example both the contractors and the VA Medical costs of Iraq are not counted in the budget for the Iraq war. There are more contractors in Iraq than there are troops. Iraq has the largest non proven reserves of oil in the world. The CIA's budget is secret.

One DIRECT example of a proxy government would be the Shah, who was put into power in '53 by Norman Schwarzkopf's daddy. This was done at the direct behest of Standard Oil because the Mossedeq government was demanding a larger share of the profits from the oil.

US troops keep the hated Saudi ruling family in power.

I have personal knowledge of our direct involvement in the coup in Chile which put Pinochet in power.

I'm not going to go through the rest. It seem obvious that we stage coups and support friendly dictators in order to guarantee the supply if not the price of commodities. It's not hard to find numerous examples.

I'm not necessarily arguing that we should never do this type of thing, although the morality of proping up dictators is clearly wrong. I would argue that although it is subsidizing the corporations, ultimately it is screwing our economy. It's deficit spending that dwarfs other monetary mismanagement.
