It's not a very admirable philosophy, and blaming the Pope for it seems kind of silly. Just say you don't care, and spare yourself and everyone else the justifications. Either you do what you consider right when no one else is watching or doing it, or you don't.

I mean when I find an item in a Costco shopping cart I know many people would just take it, but I take it in to customer service- regardless of what other people might do, because I think it's the right thing to do. And even if no one else did it, including the Pope, I'd still do it. You either try to make the world a better place, as you see it, or you contribute to making it a worse one. And to blame the fact that you make it a worse one on externalities doesn't make any sense.
