You've closed the night with a couple of the best posts I've read here in a while.

I totally agree that management is responsible, ultimately, for the mess at the Big 3 -- but it has a lot to do with managements from years gone by -- decades ago, when current management were mere rookies.

If one looks back far enough, he'll see a time when management, rather than standing up to the unions, did what managements do -- go for the short-term profitability rather than fulfilling their fiduciary responsibilities to shareholders.

Not all of them, but some unions today are sheer evil. This card-check nonsense is nothing more than evil intimidation of the highest order. That so-called liberals can stand idly by and support this evil is shocking to me.

These extortion devices have outlived their usefulness and the amount of power they hold makes them insurmountable, even for a strong politician like Reagan. Obama is an absolute puppet in this situation.

Well said Joe. I'll also add the notion that the liberals in the media think the UAW is earning a fair wage and that every blue collar worker in America ought to be earning that much. Anyone who isn't is probably being "exploited" by his or her employer.

That's why they aren't impressed by foreign auto makers opening up plants in the Deep South and hiring non-UAW employees for much less. Besides, it's the Deep South. They voted for Bush twice, and most of them even voted for McCain. Why pay attention to them?

By the way, good response to another, uh, hypocritical post from Ted. I might have been tempted to take the bait, but you didn't.

respect someone who thinks for himself although I have yet to meet a winger who does. However, its one thing to think for yourself and its quite another to behave as if you know everything that needs to be known on a subject even when its clear you don't. And you double that transgression by speaking with great authority..almost demanding what should be done. What makes you think anyone will listen?

I have yet to hear a reasoned argument as to why a labor costs of ~$70 per hour are not the #1 reason of GM and Chrystler being bankrupt. Do you know why that is? It is because even the Dems know deep down that this is the case, that the UAW is an outrage.

Reasoned? How's this: GM and F cars have been mostly crap for the last 50 years. Until recently, they have had some of the lowest rankings in consumer reports compared to foreign makes when it comes to repairs and maintenance. Their designs for the most part suck.......you can spot a GM car of the last 3 decades ten miles away and there has been little change until recently. Traditionally, gas mileage on GM and F cars have sucked so that if you wanted good gas mileage, you went to foreign brands. That too is changing. Finally, if you want innovation, you look to foreign brands......after all, it was Toyota that came out with a hybrid not GM.

Now please tell me how all of the above is the unions fault.

Funny....the way you see unions I see corporate CEO types. I don't think you can trust them any farther than you can throw them. And the recent behavior of many CEOs has confirmed this observation of mine.

If you think that I am going to defend the management, you are wrong. They have destroyed billions of shareholder equity. They let the UAW rob the shareholders blind. While they were supposedly working for the shareholders. They appointed their cronies on the boards to rubber stamp their inflated salaries, and worst of all, their golden parachutes.

Well, good, at least we are seeing some progress. And let me just say, I don't think the unions are blameless in this mess. However, I think the blame starts and stops at the top, not the bottom. Its mgmt who has the ultimate control.
