Problem with flat tax which with large personal exemptions could be more progressive than the current income tax, is that exemptions for mortgage interest, and charitable donations are key to the housing industry and charities. Not to mention the accountants lobby. With flat tax accountants might be out of business and charities might fail and housing might falter more (g).

True, in short run, but in long run, it would be better if people make decisions based on merit, rather than based on the tax code.
