Rush Limbaugh supporter Leo Balestrieri, left, has a heated debate with Limbaugh critic Shahid Freeman over the merits and misgivings of Limbaugh views and commentary. WEST PALM BEACH - The national Democratic Party unveiled its raspberry for Rush Limbaugh on Tuesday in Palm Beach County.

A traveling billboard with the teasing message "Americans didn't vote for a Rush to failure" and an image of a cigar-smoking Limbaugh debuted in West Palm Beach, immediately causing a firestorm between supporters of Limbaugh and backers of President Obama.

"I think it's disgraceful," said Leo Balestrieri of Palm Beach, who passed the billboard, which was attached to the side of a truck parked on Clematis Street. "I think Rush is a good man. He has a right to his freedom of speech. ... Obama wants to turn this country into a socialist state."

Balestrieri's objections turned into a shouting match with Allen Mergaman, president of the Mid-County Democratic Club.

"[Limbaugh] wants the country to fail," he yelled at Balestrieri.

The Democratic National Committee sponsored a contest last month for a witty slogan to counter Limbaugh's oft-repeated refrain that he hopes Obama's policies fail.

The traveling billboard will be in West Palm Beach for the next two days, making appearances throughout the city. The DNC wanted to deliver the message to its political nemesis in his backyard. The conservative radio talk show host has a home in Palm Beach.

West Palm Beach Mayor Lois Frankel, a Democrat, welcomed the provocative billboard to her city, laughing as Obama and Limbaugh supporters verbally sparred. She called the billboard a "good-natured poke at Rush" with an underlying important message.

"Americans are behind our president," she said. "We want him to succeed. If he succeeds, America succeeds. Sometimes the best message is delivered with humor."

Jennifer Morales, co-owner of Pizza Girl in West Palm Beach, came out of her restaurant to take pictures of the billboard.

"I'm going to send it to everybody. It's hilarious," she said. "I think we had some hope with the new administration. [Limbaugh] making a statement like he did is so negative. He's trying to dampen our hope."

But Sid Dinerstein, chairman of the Republican Party of Palm Beach County, said the Democrats' message may come back to bite them later.

"We're in the middle of a frantic rush to failure and a massive theft of intergenerational wealth," he said. "We have failed our children on a colossal scale, and it's good the DNC is going to remind everybody."

The mobile billboard company carting around the sign for the DNC drove it down from North Carolina early Monday. The response from motorists was mixed.

"You get two scenarios: A honk with a thumbs-up or a honk with a middle finger," said Zeb Williams, co-owner of the billboard company. "We left at 7 a.m. yesterday and we got our first middle finger at 7:15 a.m."
