I have a great friend who was a professional waiter for many years. I know a few others too. I learned that most often the most demanding customers tip the worst. This caused introspection and now when the waiter sucks I just ask for the minimum and tip commensurate to the effort I had to expend to help them.

I recently tipped 5%. He was trying but he kept forgetting and messing up. If he had said he was new it would have doubled.
