Yeah. That has to change. Do you think the government should serve as the rating agency? That MIGHT make sense; I haven't thought it through. But at least there should be serious regulations on interactions between the ratings agencies and the institutions whose holdings they rate.

Government's running of AIG Fannie and Fredie does not exactly inspire confidence in me.

BTW, the main usefullness of the rating agencies recently is them being a CYA instrument for investment managers.

It would make sense if the rating agencies somehow worked and were paid by the investors, rather than issuers of debt.
