Hi Sam. 802.16 can satisfy some of the backhaul at the extremities where it is still too expensive to drive fiber, but it's instructive on some level to consider that .16 itself requires a fiber backhual at some point. Whether its < 100Mbps role as backaul is sustainable, given the rising levels of user demand (the larger wireless cos are now installing optical GigE links to replace their 2 to 4 T1s previously used) however, is questionable, unless multi-channel/multiple-system bonding at some point is used, at which point the solution becomes Pyrrhic, IMO.
