carrier battle groups,

There is a school of thought that says the only we have carrier battle groups because we have not fought a peer enemy. That modern anti-ship missiles are far ahead of ship defenses, and that the carriers would be destroyed in case of all-out war.

Take the case of Iran. If we attacked them, they would launch many anti-ship shore based ones at our ships in the Gulf. I suspect that our carriers would have to withdraw.
