I think we have agreed on a single exception to the rule. The ethics dilemma comes in how far this exception may be extended. Heinous intent is key to the exception, and the lie should be only to the extent that it directly reduces the likelihood of a heinous action being carried out. Most people consider it reasonable to extend this exception to soldiers in a war situation as well (Don't give your captors information that could bring harm to members of your group). I would agree to that. But that complicates the situation for soldiers far beyond anything I would want to be a part of.
