The increase in farmland put into production to meet the demand of WW-I resulted in a collapse of commodity prices in the 1920s.

This increased production followed by collapse occurred in most agricultural zones around the world.

Farm mechanization began in the 1870s. My Great-grandfather's 36 farms in Moldova (Bessarabia) 20 miles north of Kishinev were all fully mechanized by 1914, and had been for some time. Later on diesel replaced steam but this was both positive and negative. The steam equipment could be fueled with farm waste while diesel required the purchase of fuel. But improvements in diesel technology over time made farm equipment lighter and faster.

Below the old steam-powered tractor still powers the grain thresher after harvest on August 19, 1914.

In the bottom photos, the family is photographed in front of their farm house approximately 1890.
