Let me get something straight. I think very highly of QCOM's R&D and no doubt that they have accomplished a lot over the years and that is why I have invested in this company. However, I want people to stop bringing Snapdragon, Gobi, etc as examples of good R&D.

A good analogy that I can think would explain what I am trying to say would be QCOM building a new type of shovel. No doubt that QCOM's new shovel would be a revolutionary and the best shovel in the field. But they fail when they try to come up with different ways of using that shovel in different applications. For example, QCOM might invest in a venture that would use the shovel in digging for gold and fertilizing your fields at the same time. In the dark days when no one knew such a shovel could have been invented, I think it made sense to come up with some useful applications. But not when every other company has or is in the process of coming up with cool application for the shovel.

How many of QCOM's applications are used in the iPhone? Did any of the applications that QCOM invested in helped in development of iPhone? I am really not sure if we can make that case.
