SAN JOSE: Skype is supporting a series of mobile device applications and product launches with a consumer and media outreach campaign to explain to consumers its new offerings in the mobile phone space.

Once limited to desktop-based telephone calls, Skype, a division of eBay, launched applications for Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch last week, prior to the CTIA Conference 2009 in Las Vegas. The company also previewed its BlackBerry technology, scheduled for download next month. Earlier this year, it released software for Nokia devices and those using the Microsoft Windows Mobile and Google Android operating systems.

Aided by Kaplow in the US, Skype conducted a press conference at CTIA on March 31, broadcasting it to Internet viewers via webcast.

“Our goal is to enable the world's conversations, and obviously they are happening on mobile devices,” said Jennifer Caukin, director of marketing and PR at Skype.

Skype's media outreach, which is incorporating general interest consumer titles and business, technology, and telephone-focused media, is intended to reach a broad-based demographic. However, the company is also targeting specific groups with its message, Caukin said.

Emphasizing Skype's cost savings will be important, she added. Skype users can call other users for free, and it has built a reputation on its lower cost international calls via Voice over Internet Protocol.
