>Antitrust laws protect competition. Free and open competition benefits consumers by ensuring lower prices and new and better products.

I read this to say the Law is intended to protect the consumer and as a result competition is protected.

Elmer, the language is perfectly clear.

Protecting the consumer is a motivation, and the antitrust laws which protect competition are the means.

A) "Antitrust laws protect competition."

B) "Free and open competition benefits consumers[...]"

B follows A.

What benefits consumers? Free and open competition.

What protects free and open competition? Antitrust laws.

If you insist on disagreeing, please provide the rationale underlying your interpretation of the DOJ quote.
