The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Saturday shows that 34% of the nation's voters now Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Thirty-one percent (31%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of +3, matching his lowest rating to date (see trends).

With the exception of a brief blip earlier this week, the President’s Approval Index ratings have generally been in the +4 to + 8 range for the past month. Our regular Saturday morning review takes a look at the week’s key polls to see “What They Told Us.” ,

The Presidential Approval Index is calculated by subtracting the number who Strongly Disapprove from the number who Strongly Approve. It is updated daily at 9:30 a.m. Eastern (sign up for free daily e-mail update). Updates also available on Twitter.

Overall, 56% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the President's performance so far. Forty-three percent (43%) disapprove. For more data, see Obama By the Numbers and recent demographic highlights. Ratings for Congress are up, but so is the number who say that most members of Congress are corrupt.

Forty-seven percent (47%) now view the nation’s economy as the top issue facing the nation. Fifteen percent (15%) say national security issues are most important while 14% cite fiscal policy concerns.

Please take a moment to predict where the President’s Approval Index will be at the end of his first 100 days in office. Currently, on Saturday morning, the average prediction is for the Approval Index to be at +7 after 100 days. You can also other topics at the Rasmussen Reports Prediction Center.

The number of Democrats in the nation declined two percentage points in March while the number of Republicans dropped half-a-point. While Democrats continue to enjoy a significant advantage over the GOP in terms of partisan identification, the gap is the smallest it’s been since December 2007.

As the President meets with world leaders, most Americans believe the economy will be helped more by the decisions of U.S. business leaders to grow their own businesses than by the actions of world leaders on behalf of the global economy. Americans are evenly divided on the President’s commitment to have the government back auto warranties.

A Fordham University professor has rated the national pollsters on their record in Election 2008. We also have provided a summary of our results for your review.

See comments on comparing Job Approval ratings from different polling firms.

Daily tracking results are collected via telephone surveys of 500 likely voters per night and reported on a three-day rolling average basis. The margin of sampling error—for the full sample of 1,500 Likely Voters--is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Results are also compiled on a full-week basis and crosstabs for the full-week results are available for Premium Members.

Like all polling firms, Rasmussen Reports weights its data to reflect the population at large (see methodology). Among other targets, Rasmussen Reports weights data by political party affiliation using a dynamic weighting process. While partisan affiliation is generally quite stable over time, there are a fair number of people who waver between allegiance to a particular party or independent status. Over the past four years, the number of Democrats in the country has increased while the number of Republicans has decreased.

Our baseline targets are established based upon separate survey interviews with a sample of adults nationwide completed during the preceding three months (a total of 45,000 interviews) and targets are updated monthly. Currently, the baseline targets for the adult population are 40.1% Democrats, 33.1% Republicans, and 26.7% unaffiliated. Likely voter samples typically show a slightly smaller advantage for the Democrats.

A review of last week’s key polls is posted each Saturday morning. Other stats on Obama are updated daily on the Rasmussen Reports Obama By the Numbers page. We also invite you to review other recent demographic highlights from the tracking polls.

Islamic rights group demands reprimand of KSFO talk show hosts
sfgate.com

The nation's leading Islamic civil rights group today issued a call for San Francisco-based KSFO 560 AM to reprimand two local talk show hosts -- and has asked the station's listeners to contact advertisers -- following a segment that it says "mocked Islam, misstated Muslim beliefs and cast suspicion on political participation by American Muslims."

The Council on American-Islamic Relations -- known as CAIR -- sent out the letter Thursday after The Chronicle Spin Cycle Political blog this week reported on a morning comedy segment by KSFO 560-AM hosts Brian Sussman and his radio sidekick "Officer Vic."

The pair, during the Monday program, did a comedic segment about Islam and its tenets, and joked that "Islamic finance is about living within your means and helping the needy -- unless they're Jews," the blog reported. Additionally, they observed that "the great honorable qualities of that good old time religion: honor killings, female circumcision, not allowing women to drive ... Jews are monkeys, pigs.''

Listen to the audio here.

Ibrahim Hooper, spokesman for CAIR, told The Chronicle the Washington D.C.-based advocacy organization is asking American Muslims and consumers to contact KSFO officials and advertisers to express their concerns about what he called the "smears" on the Muslim religion.

"We're firm believers in the First Amendment," Hooper told The Chronicle. "We're not saying people don't have the right to say what they want ... but people who listen to the radio station have no obligation to take their hard-earned dollars and buy the goods and services of advertisers who place their messages on these programs. That's a freedom -- just as free speech is a freedom."

"We have to challenge these kinds of smears against our faith," Hooper said. "It's this kind of rhetoric that can lead to discrimination and violence against ordinary Muslims."

Hooper also said that the hosts' characterizations of the tenents of Islam were incorrect and offensive. "So-called 'honor killings,' female genital mutilation and not allowing women to drive are not part of Islam," he said. "Muslims respect Jews and Christians as 'people of the book' who received earlier revelations from God."

Hooper cited the Quran, the holy book of Islam: "Those who believe (in the Quran), those who follow the Jewish (scriptures), the Sabians, and the Christians -- any who believe in God and the Last Day and work righteousness -- on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve." (Quran, 5:69)

It's not the first time that CAIR has been involved in protests regarding hosts at KSFO, including Sussman.

Hooper noted that in 2005, the same host asked a caller to prove he was not Muslim by saying "Allah is a whore." In 2007, Lee Rodgers, another host at KSFO, warned "enemy" Muslim nations: "You keep screwing around with stuff like this, we're going to kill a bunch of you -- millions of you."

CAIR is a member of the Hate Hurts America Multifaith Community Coalition (HHA), a group of religious and civic organizations which CAIR says are "seeking to challenge hate speech in American society.''

The coalition was sparked by actions of another Bay Area talk show host, Michael Savage, whose comments have sparked a boycott of his program.

We've put in a call to KSFO's president and general manager, Michael Luckoff, and will report his reponse when we hear back.

The unemployment rate rose +0.4 to 8.5% which is the highest since 1983 with 13.2 million people unemployed. If this recession feels a little more harsh than most it's because it is---we've now got the highest actual number of unemployed individuals since records were started in 1940.

But that just counts people who are freshly out of a job. If you add those who are working part time out of necessity until they find a full time job, totaling 9 million--twice year ago levels--and those out of the labor force but still willing to work--the unemployment rate rises to a whopping 15.6%.

The government chooses to only report those freshly out of work because it makes the numbers look a lot better--but the truth is the employment situation is bad--the question on traders' minds is will it get a whole lot worse? And the answer seems to be no. The economy has not materially worsened in Q1 and companies are now down to their core employment. It would take another major demand downturn to force companies to enact another round of layoffs. The nonessential and unskilled workers are the first to go followed by staff reductions and mid-level managers who are deemed unnecessary--they've cut the fat and some of the meat--from here they'll be cutting bone and good workers are just too hard to replace. Even though we'll likely see more job cuts the consensus is the rate of cuts will improve.

John Edwards investigation reported
From Staff Reports
Published: Fri, Apr. 03, 2009
newsobserver.com

The National Enquirer reported on its Web site that a federal grand jury in Raleigh is investigating whether former Sen. John Edwards violated campaign-finance laws in his bid for president in 2008 by making payments to Rielle Hunter, his admitted mistress.

U.S. Attorney George Holding said Thursday that he "was not going to confirm or deny any investigation" regarding Edwards.

A federal grand jury was convened in Raleigh on Wednesday. Grand jury proceedings are secret.

Such grand juries have the power to call and question witnesses and request documents. Prosecutors interview witnesses in front of jurors. At the end of the query, the grand jury has the power to bring charges.

Wade Smith, a prominent Raleigh defense attorney and Edwards mentor, declined to comment on whether he was representing Edwards.

"I'm at a place where I cannot make any comment to confirm or deny," Smith said. "I can't say anything. It's possible, at some later point, I can."

Edwards got his start as a plaintiffs' attorney as a young associate in the firm headed by Smith. They are longtime friends.

Edwards, a former U.S. senator from North Carolina and twice failed Democratic candidate for president, has fallen hard since last summer. He admitted on national television that he cheated on his wife, Elizabeth, with Hunter, a video producer who was hired to work on his campaign.

Edwards has denied that he is the father of Hunter's daughter, who was born in February 2008. His former aide Andrew Young has claimed to be the father.

The late Fred Baron, former chairman of Edwards' 2004 and 2008 finance committee, said last summer that he paid, without Edwards' knowledge, Young and Hunter to relocate to California after they were hounded by tabloids in the wake of speculation about Edwards' liaison with Hunter.

A new book by Elizabeth Edwards, a breast cancer survivor, is due out in May. It is unclear whether she will address her husband's infidelity in the book, which is titled "Resilience: Reflections on the Burdens and Gifts of Facing Life's Adversities."

TV host Oprah Winfrey interviewed Elizabeth Edwards at the couple's Chapel Hill home last week, according to NationalJournal.com. The former senator was on hand for the interview, the publication reported. The program is scheduled to air May 11 and would be the first nationally televised interview by either since last summer.
